The Beginning Of A New Chapter Of Music
Or: An attempt of an appropriate biography
Who are they? Why are they doing such things? And what are they going to do next?
These are questions some people might ask, some might not. Anyway: Here we are. And that's who we are: Two experimentalists who met in the nebulous nightlife of Berlin in winter 2011.
Starting to use extraordinary combinations of sounds, they called themselves 'The Emma Project' and found their way to Electro-, Athmo- and Indie genres with archetypes like 'Depeche Mode' and 'Management'.
All members are multi-instrumentalists and even with only two active songwriters the project is capable of using sounds and playing instruments like guitars, basses, violins, cellos, saxophones, clarinets, pianos, percussions, drums and many more.
The musicians also share their love to classical and modern synthesizers played digitally as well as analogically.
Every musician does vocals, so Emma creates an distinctive sound that is recognizable in every song.
Because of the huge number of voice tracks and instruments that are combined, the project started with very experimental sounds and tunes, quite a few of them still unreleased.
Originally counting three members, Emma had to part company with founding member Julian, who had to take leave of the project due to private issues in spring 2013 after several successful concerts. Julian still is a steady visitor at Emma's studio and in rehearsal sessions and will hopefully also be seen on stage with us every now and then. With Julian an important part of the electronic principles and ideas has left though.
The remaining members of the project, Fabrice and Michael, had to face and conduct several rearrangements concerning the live concept and the music's style. They decided to change the band into a more live-orientated and less experimental project.
Thus the next goal was to form a well blending group of musicians. After introducing drums and percussion, the project reduced former standards like static beats and adopted more and more indierock schemata which continue to be combined with electronic elements.
During the search for live musicians it came to several cooperations with male and female singers and drummers, percussionists and bassists, several of them appearing on the first EP 'The Emma Project'.
The EP was recorded and produced by Mathis Richter-Reichhelm, Michael Handschuh and Hans Seelenmeyer in the Mahoni Studios and Sunny Side Studios in Berlin and was released on October 3rd 2013 by Toolboxx Records. At this point we would like to thank these three men, without whom the EP couldn't have been realized in such a fantastic way.
Since the collaboration with the bassist Anton began in late August 2013, he added his style and skills to the pool of Emma's sounds, both on stage and in the recording studio. He soon became the third of Emma’s three faces, restocking the vacancy that Julian left behind back then. From now on Anton is a fully involved member in all relations and we are looking forward to working with this great man.
In August and September 2013 Emma has set up a live concept including songs and arrangements, followed by a time of intensive rehearsals, and completed by a couple of successful private testing gigs, although finding a drummer still was an ongoing task for the two founding members.
In January 2014 The Emma Project finally found the last piece of what they needed for their live acts: The drummer Florian Schack joined and immediately turned Emma’s former blurred live concepts into an overwhelmingly defined and matching show that is presented in the live acts in spring and summer 2014. Florian truly made this project ready to rock and stun Berlin’s night life! Check out the link tour for the upcoming events.
The collaboration with Florian and Anton gave Fabrice and Michael more and more inspiration and led to the production of the second EP, expected to be released in November 2014. With this EP Emma makes herself aware where she comes from and what developments she made in the last year. The outcome is a modern and completely new piece of music, huge electro backdrops forming a deep environment for burly dance tracks as well as experimental saxophone sounds combined with frazzles of words and voices or at the opposite end of the scale peaceful and lovely sounds from the guitar and soft synths forming ballads and melancholic moods.
In June 2014 Emma met the guitarist Michail Sergey, a musician who was originally educated in jazz guitar and piano. In a small collaboration Michail played some tunes for resampling and other studio purpose, just like many of Emma’s friends had done. But soon the idea came in: Emma needed this man and his guitar artistry on stage, and from August 31st on, Michail is a steady member of the project’s live band and studio family.
By joining the band Michail let the live music gain a whole new dimension of sound, please welcome him on board in one of our next concerts!
At this time Fabrice, Anton and Michael are working on public relations, which as a matter of course includes the production of the second EP as well as projects like fan shirts and bags, planning the tour and gigs, updating and presenting the results of recent photo and video shootings, setting up a acoustic live set for street and bar music …
